Entry to Higher Graphic Communication is normally granted to students who have already achieved National 5 Graphic Communication at A or B. Exceptional entry may be granted to students who have shown the academic ability and mature work ethic required to ‘crash’ a Higher course.
The aims of the Course are to enable learners to develop:
♦ skills in graphic communication techniques, including the use of equipment,
graphics materials and software
♦ creativity in the production of graphic communications to produce visual impact in
meeting a specified purpose
♦ skills in evaluating the effectiveness of graphics in communicating and meeting
their purpose
♦ an understanding of graphic communication standards protocols and conventions,
where these apply
♦ an understanding of the impact of graphic communication technologies on our
environment and society
The New Higher course is radically different from the Old Higher / Intermediate 2 Graphic Communication. Although manual drawing board skills are still taught and highly valued, there is no longer a timed drawing aspect to the qualification. Instead students compile a folio through the year demonstrating they have met the standards of the course. This allows the students to achieve Units in 2D and 3D Graphic Communication. In order to be awarded the full qualification students will be required to submit a design folio for the Course Assignment worth 70 marks (50%) and sit an external exam of 2 hours also worth 70 marks (50%). National 5 students will then be awarded a pass at A, B, C or No Award.
Students achieving Higher at A or B would be welcome to continue their studies on to Advanced Higher Graphic Communication.
